christmas alone

The Christmas holiday can be a drag when you are spending it by yourself. Christmas decorations are up, your favourite stores won’t stop playing Last Christmas by Wham! on a loop. It can get really lonely in a new city where you are far away from home but you can still enjoy the holidays.

In the last 5 years, I have spent 2 Christmases with my family but this year is different as I will be spending it by myself. The other 3 Christmases, I spent them it with my extended family which was really fun. The older I get, the more Santa Claus and all the excitement of  Christmas fade away. My initial thought about this year’s Christmas was it would be gloomy but I will be spending it with my new friends.  I am excited as I will get to experience Christmas through their eyes. Every one of them will be bringing an element of Christmas that would make it a day like no other.

I came up with a list of things you can do keep yourself busy during the Christmas holiday.

 Shopping

There is something about going to the store to pick out items and trying on a bunch of outfits. It can be very therapeutic and engaging. Christmas is when you get most of the amazing sales of the year which in my opinion are better than Black Friday sales, so you might as well take advantage of it.

Go on a road trip

I have not had time to get up to much since I moved to Halifax. This Christmas break will be the perfect opportunity to explore my city and its neighbouring town. The Nigerian Christmas culture for a few tribes is travelling to the village for Christmas. My family usually don’t do this but there was a time we did and went to explore the beautiful  Ikogosi warm spring. It was indeed a memorable one. Visit the city closest to you and be a tourist.

Sleepover

You didn’t get to see most of your friends all term because of schoolwork? Best time to reconnect and have a sleepover with lots of chitchats.

 Volunteer

This is a great way to contribute to your local community, showcasing the spirit of help and giving. In addition to this, it could be a great avenue to meet new people.

Outdoor Activities

I remember going to Winter Wonderland in 2015, I had so much fun that I lost my voice. Depending on what your city’s festivities are like, you can go see all your favourite artists at a concert, go ice skating or visit the amusement park.

Declutter your closet

This was something I did last year, I gave away old textbooks from High school, clothes I no longer need and got rid of a bunch items in my closet. It took me over 2 weeks to clear everything out of my closet. How many items do you own that you are yet to wear? If you haven’t worn an item for a year then you are better off giving it away. Plus it gives your closet space to own more trendy items.

Binge watch all your favourite shows and movies

Game of thrones

I just started  Game of Thrones and I am loving it. The Lannisters have to go, in my opinion. Netflix has a tonne new movies out and I am yet to see any. This will be the perfect excuse for me to stay in bed all day in my pyjamas and snack while I binge watch Game of Thrones. You can take yourself to the cinema to see the latest blockbusters if you are looking for an excuse to be outdoor.

Read a book or 2

Get your nose buried in a book. There are tonnes of free e-books online which could read simply for pleasure or self-development. I will definitely be reading the On becoming by Michelle Obama.

Plan ahead

2018 will be history in 19 days and the Christmas holiday is a perfect time to reflect on the year and plan ahead. Focus majorly on the positive aspects that happened and think of how you can do better for the next year. There is something about writing out your goals and visions that pushes you to make moves to achieve them.

Decorate your room

You haven’t had time to decorate your room? This will be a good time to get items to switch up the ambience of your bedroom. This is a chance to give your room a whole new vibe or just put up things you already have that makes your room feel like home. Pinterest is a good place for room decor inspiration.
