Where to Eat in Halifax: A Guide to Casual & Delicious Eats

Best Breakfast Spots in Halifax & Bedford
1) Smitty’s Family Restaurant
For a classic breakfast done right, Smitty’s is a must-visit. Their crispy, golden hashbrowns are legendary, and the breakfast plates are generous and satisfying. Perfect for weekend brunches or a comforting morning meal. I have eaten across all their locations in Halifax, Lacewood & Dartmouth and the quality is on par.
Must-try: Breakfast platter with hashbrowns.
2)Pur & Simple
Pur & Simple is a bright, modern spot perfect for a relaxed brunch. They serve creative breakfast dishes, hearty bowls, and delicious coffee. Great for a slow morning or weekend catch-up. The smoothies are so yummy. My most preferred location is the one at Bayers Lake. It’s a very busy spot but you get a sit in no time.
3)East Cup Cafe
A cozy café ideal for coffee and light breakfast bites. East Cup Cafe is great for casual mornings, working remotely, or grabbing a quick breakfast before heading out.

4) Freeman’s Little New York
Freeman’s is a local favorite for comfort food. Known for its New York–style deli menu, this spot offers pizza, sandwiches, pasta, and hearty lunch plates. A casual, filling option for group lunches or solo visits.
5) Efty Dishes
Efty Dishes serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making it a versatile casual spot you can visit any time of the day. Don’t miss their Sunday buffet, which is perfect for sampling a variety of dishes. One of my personal favorites is their porridge, as well as the amala and gbegiri soup served with assorted meat, a flavorful and comforting Nigerian classic.
6) Chaa Baa Thai
One of the best Thai restaurants in Halifax, Chaa Baa Thai serves authentic curries, pad Thai, and flavorful salads. Perfect for casual lunch with friends.

May Garden is a classic Chinese restaurant offering stir-fries, noodle dishes, and family-style meals. It’s a great option for both takeout and casual dine-in dinners. My personal favourite is the Young Chow fried rice, especially with a special request to make it spicy, it adds the perfect kick to an already flavorful dish.

For authentic Nigerian cuisine, Naija Kitchen is a must-visit. Their bold, flavorful dishes include: Jollof rice , Fried rice & tasty Nigerian soups. Perfect for a flavor-packed dinner with friends or family.
9) Captain Seafood Boil
Seafood lovers will enjoy Captain Seafood Boil, where you can get crab, shrimp, lobster, and more, all packed with flavour. Perfect for a casual group dinner or a fun weekend meal.
